Chatting with the Knowledge Assistant

How to open the Knowledge Assistant and start a conversation.

The Knowledge Assistant gives you instant access to an AI-powered expert that can provide accurate answers, generate content, and more.

Opening the Knowledge Assistant

You can access the Knowledge Assistant from anywhere in Joy. Click the  Knowledge Assistant icon to open it as a panel without leaving your current page, or click Assistant in the menu to open it as a full-page experience.

The Assistant interface

Whether you open the Knowledge Assistant as a panel or full page, the layout features two sections: a sidebar and a chat area.

If you don't see the sidebar, click the  Chat History icon at the top of the chat area to open it.

In the sidebar, you can find:

  • Your Assistant's name and avatar at the top (full-page view only).
  • A  New Chat button to start a new conversation.
  • A search bar to find previous chats.
  • A Projects section listing the projects you have access to, with a  New Project icon to create a new one.
  • Your chat history, with the most recent chats first.

A chat is a single conversation with your Assistant. A project is a folder that groups related chats together.

You can hide the sidebar by clicking the Menu icon at the top of the chat area.

Chat area

The chat area works like any messaging tool. Your messages and the Assistant's responses each appear with their own icon, and you type your prompts at the bottom.

At the top of the chat area, you'll find a  New Conversation icon, a  commands icon, and a  More Settings icon for options like favorite, rename, archive, move to project, and delete.

In the panel view, a  Close icon also appears so you can close the panel to return to the current page. You can also drag the edge of the panel to resize it.

Starting a new chat

To start chatting with the Knowledge Assistant:

Click New Conversation.

This opens a fresh chat.

Type your question or request (called a prompt).

To send it, press Enter on your keyboard or click the  Send icon.

Joy automatically names each chat after your first message and adds it to the sidebar. You can go back to any chat to review the conversation or continue where you left off.

To start a chat inside a specific project, click the project first to open it, then follow the steps above.

Start a new chat whenever you change topics. This helps the Assistant give better answers and keeps your history organized. For example, you might have one chat for onboarding questions, another for drafting a proposal, and another for researching a competitor.

Managing your chats

All of your chats and projects are listed in the sidebar. You can manage a chat from the  More Settings icon at the top of the chat area, or by hovering over a chat in the sidebar and clicking its  More Settings icon.

Reviewing and continuing a chat

Click any chat to reread the conversation or pick up where you left off.

Finding a chat

Type a keyword into the search bar to find chats and projects. Search looks at chat names, project names, and the content within your chats.

Organizing chats into projects

To keep things organized, you can group related chats into projects, which work like folders. For example, if you have several chats about onboarding, you can pull them into one project so they are easy to find later.

To create a project, click the  New Project icon.

To move a chat into a project, you can drag it or select Move to Project from  More Settings. To remove a chat from a project, select Remove from Project from  More Settings.

Renaming a chat

Joy names each chat after your first message. To rename it, select Rename from  More Settings.

Favoriting a chat

To quickly access your most used chats, select Favorite from  More Settings. Favorited chats appear in a dedicated section in the sidebar. To remove a chat from your favorites, select Unfavorite.

Archiving a chat

To keep things tidy, select Archive from  More Settings. Archived chats move to an archived section in the sidebar, so they are still accessible if you need them. You can unarchive a chat at any time to bring it back.

Deleting a chat

To permanently remove a chat, select Delete from  More Settings.

Using a command

Commands are reusable shortcuts that run a specific prompt with one click. To use a command in a chat, click the  Commands icon at the top of the chat area, or type / in your message and the first few letters of the command. See Assistant commands for more details.

Copying a response

You can copy an Assistant's answer in the chat (called a response) to share with someone or use elsewhere.

To copy a response, hover over it and click the  Copy icon. You can then paste it into an email, document, or wherever you need it. Whenever possible, the pasted response will retain its original formatting, such as bullets, bold text, and links.

Following a citation

When the Assistant's answer references one of your assets in the Knowledge Center, it includes citations that link back to the source. Click a citation to view the original document.

Downloading a generated file

When the Assistant generates a file, such as a document or presentation, a download link appears with the response. Click it to save the file to your device.

Closing the Knowledge Assistant

In the panel view, click the  Close icon to close the panel and return to your current page. In the full-page view, navigate to another page using the menu. Your chats are automatically saved so you can access them later.
