Managing content
How to add and format content blocks in the FlexDoc Editor.
From the FlexDoc Editor, you can add and format content in your FlexDoc, from text and images to tables, videos, and AI-generated content. When you're ready, share the FlexDoc with others.
Managing blocks
Each piece of content that you add with the FlexDoc Editor is called a "block": paragraphs, images, headings, videos, tables, and so on. You can style each block independently. For example, you can make the text in one paragraph block larger or change its background color without affecting the other blocks on the page.
Adding a block
Every page starts with an empty text block so you can begin typing right away. To add a new block or change the format of an existing one, type / on your keyboard to open the / menu, or use the toolbar.
- / menu: The quickest way to add any type of block. Press / to open it, then select an option from the list. You can also start typing the name of the block you want to narrow the results and press Enter on your keyboard to add it. The menu includes all available block types, from images and tables to videos and AI tools.
- Toolbar: The toolbar gives you two dropdowns for working with blocks. The Block format dropdown (it displays the current format, such as "Normal" or "Heading 1") lets you change the current block to a heading, list, quote, or code block. The Insert dropdown lets you add special blocks such as images, tables, and embedded videos.
You can also press Enter on your keyboard to add a new block directly below the current one.
In some cases, such as inside a bulleted list, pressing Enter adds another block with the same formatting (for example, another bullet in your list).
If you don't see an option in the toolbar, click the More formatting dropdown at the end of the toolbar. On smaller screens, some toolbar options (such as bold, italic, underline, and alignment) move there to save space.
Moving a block
To move a block to a different position on the page:
Hover over the block you want to move.
The Drag icon appears beside the block.
Click the Drag icon, then hold down your mouse button and drag the block to its new location.
The block's content lifts from the page.
Release your mouse button to drop the block in its new location.
The block displays in its new location.
Formatting text
The FlexDoc Editor offers several ways to format text. The table below lists each option and where to find it. To change a block's type (for example, from a paragraph to a heading or list), use the Block format dropdown described in Adding a block.
| Formatting option | Toolbar | Floating toolbar (text selected) |
|---|---|---|
| Typeface | Yes | No |
| Text size | Yes | No |
| Bold | Yes | Yes |
| Italic | Yes | Yes |
| Underline | Yes | Yes |
| Code (inline) | Yes | Yes |
| Strikethrough | Yes | Yes |
| Subscript | Yes | No |
| Superscript | Yes | No |
| Highlight | Yes | No |
| Lowercase | Yes | No |
| Uppercase | Yes | No |
| Capitalize (visually applies title case to each word) | Yes | No |

Strikethrough, Subscript, Superscript, Highlight, Lowercase, Uppercase, Capitalize, and Clear formatting are grouped under the toolbar's More formatting dropdown rather than shown directly.
Many of these options also have keyboard shortcuts.
Aligning and indenting content
The Alignment dropdown in the toolbar controls how your text and images are positioned horizontally on the page. It also has Outdent and Indent options for pushing text toward or away from the edge of the page.
To align or indent your content:
Select the block you want to align.
For text, click anywhere in the block. For an image, click the image to select it.
Click the Alignment dropdown in the toolbar.
Select the alignment or indentation option you want.
Adding a list
Use the / menu or select a list type from the Block format dropdown in the toolbar to add bulleted lists, numbered lists, and check lists (to-do lists).
You can also turn existing content into a list. Highlight the blocks you want to include, then select a list type from the Block format dropdown.

Adding a columns layout
Columns let you display a block of text beside an image. Click the Insert dropdown in the toolbar or use the / menu, then select Columns Layout to add a two-column layout to your page.
Adding a collapsible container
A collapsible container lets you hide content under a heading that readers can expand and collapse. For example, you can create a list of frequently asked questions by using each question as the heading and placing the answer inside.
To add a collapsible container:
Click the **Insert** dropdown in the toolbar or use the / menu, then select **Collapsible Container**.
A new collapsible block is added to the page.
Type a heading on the first line.
Pick a heading that gives readers a clear idea of what they'll find inside.
Press Enter on your keyboard or click below the heading to move to the content area, then add your content.
This content is hidden from the reader until they open the container.
Undo and redo
If you make a mistake, click the Undo icon in the toolbar. Click the Redo icon to reverse the undo.
Adding a table
To add a table:
Click the Insert dropdown in the toolbar or use the / menu, then select Table.
The Insert table window appears.
Enter the number of Rows and Columns you want.
Click Insert.
A table appears on your page.
Adding text with voice dictation
With the speech-to-text option, you talk and Joy captures your words on the page. This is useful if you prefer not to use your keyboard or want to get your thoughts down quickly.
The Dictate icon relies on your browser's built-in speech recognition. It is available in Chrome, Edge, and Safari, but not in Firefox. In unsupported browsers, the icon does not appear. If the icon appears grayed out, your browser has blocked microphone access; update your browser's site permissions to allow it.
Click the spot on the page where you want to add text.
Click the Dictate icon in the toolbar. If prompted, grant Joy permission to use your microphone.
The icon changes to a stop button, and Joy starts listening.
Speak out loud.
Joy adds your words to the page as you talk.
Click the **Stop** icon.
Joy stops listening.
Adding an image
You can add an image to a FlexDoc by providing its URL, by dragging and dropping an image file onto the page, or by pasting an image from your clipboard.
Need images for your FlexDoc? Check out our list of free image resources.
To add an image with a URL:
Click the Insert dropdown in the toolbar or use the / menu, then select Image.
The Insert Image window opens.
In the Image URL field, enter the web address of the image.
In the Alt text field, enter a brief description of the image.
Screen readers use this text to describe the image.
Click Insert.
The image is added to your page.
To remove an image, select it and press the Delete key on your keyboard.
Adding an inline image
Unlike a regular image, which sits in its own block, an inline image floats to one side of the page so text wraps around it.
To add an inline image:
Click where you want the inline image to appear.
Click the Insert dropdown in the toolbar or use the / menu, then select Inline Image.
The Insert Inline Image window opens.
Follow steps 2–3 in Adding an image with a URL to enter the image URL and alt text.
From the Position dropdown, select Float left, Float right, or Full width.
This setting controls which side of the page the image appears on and how text wraps around it.
Click Insert.
The image is added to your page.
Embedding a video
You can embed videos from YouTube or Vimeo to appear alongside your FlexDoc content.
To embed a video:
Click the Insert dropdown in the toolbar or use the / menu, then select YouTube Video or Vimeo Video.
Enter the video's URL.
Click Insert.
The video appears on your page and automatically fits the full width.
Embedding a Figma document or a Tweet / X post
To embed a Figma document or a Tweet / X post:
Click the Insert dropdown in the toolbar or use the / menu, then select Figma Document or Tweet / X Post.
Enter the URL.
Click Insert.
The Figma design or post is embedded on your page as an interactive preview.
Adding an equation
You can format mathematical equations using LaTeX (simple text commands that display complex math symbols). Equations appear on their own line by default.
To add an equation:
Click the Insert dropdown in the toolbar or use the / menu, then select Equation.
The Insert Equation window opens.
Enter your equation.
You'll see a preview as you type.
If you want the equation to appear within a line of text, select the Inline equation checkbox.
By default, equations appear on their own line.
Click Insert.
The equation is added to your page.
Here are some common LaTeX commands:
| To write | Type |
|---|---|
| Arrow | \rightarrow, \leftarrow, \leftrightarrow |
| Bracket or other delimiter (simple) | ( a ), [ b ], \{ c \}, | d |, \langle, \rangle |
| Bracket with automatic sizing | \left(\frac{numerator}{denominator}\right) |
| Color | {\color{colorname}number} |
| Fraction | \frac{numerator}{denominator} |
| Greek letter | \alpha, \beta, \pi |
| Integral | \int_{lower_limit}^{upper_limit} |
| Multiplication | \cdot |
| Root | \sqrt[index]{number} |
| Subscript | x_{number} |
| Summation | \sum_{i=1}^{n} |
| Superscript (power) | x^{number} |
| Vector | \vec{a} |
To edit an existing equation, double-click it. This opens a box where you can update the equation. To save your changes, click outside the box.
Using Excalidraw
Excalidraw is a digital whiteboard where you can draw diagrams, create simple charts, or sketch ideas. It's useful for brainstorming, flowcharts, or explaining complex concepts in your FlexDoc.
To add an Excalidraw drawing:
Click the Insert dropdown in the toolbar or use the / menu, then select Excalidraw.
A blank canvas opens.
Use the toolbar to create your drawing.
The canvas includes tools for drawing shapes, adding text, freehand sketching, and inserting images.
Click Save.
The drawing is added to your page.
Adding a poll
A poll lets you ask readers a question and collect their votes, with live results shown for each option as people vote.
To add a poll:
Click the Insert dropdown in the toolbar or use the / menu, then select Poll.
The Insert Poll window opens.
In the Question field, enter what you want to ask.
In each Options field, enter an answer choice.
Click + Add option to add more choices. You need at least two options.
Click Insert.
The poll is added to your page.
Readers can vote by clicking an option. Joy shows the percentage of votes for each option and updates the results as more people vote.
Votes are tracked per browser tab, not by user account, so the same person voting from a different tab or browser counts as a separate vote.
While the FlexDoc is open for editing, you can update the question or any option by clicking into its text. Click + Add option to add another choice, or click the Delete icon beside an option to remove it. You must keep at least two options.
Generating content with AI
Joy's AI Actions panel can draft new content or refine text you have already written.
You can open AI Actions a few ways:
- Click the Generate button in the toolbar.
- Highlight text, then click the AI actions icon in the floating toolbar.
- Use the / menu and select Ask AI or Generate with AI.
Joy's AI Actions panel includes these options:
| Action | What it does |
|---|---|
| Rewrite | Rewrites the selected text in a different tone: Professional, Casual, Friendly, or Direct. |
| Summarize | Shortens the selected text. You can specify if you want the summary to be short or medium in length, or formatted as bullet points. |
| Expand | Adds more detail to the selected text. |
| Translate | Translates the selected text into Spanish, French, German, Japanese, or Chinese. |
| Fix grammar | Corrects spelling and grammar errors in the selected text. |
| Custom prompt | Enter your own instructions. If you have text selected, describe what to do with it; otherwise, describe what you want written. |
Most actions require you to highlight text on the page first. Custom prompt is the only action that can also generate new content when nothing is selected.
To use AI Actions:
Highlight the text you want to revise, or place your cursor where you want new content added.
Click the Generate button in the toolbar or the AI actions icon in the floating toolbar.
You can also use the / menu and select Ask AI or Generate with AI.
Select an action.
Depending on what you select, you may be presented with additional options. If you select Custom prompt, enter your instructions, then click Generate.
As the AI works, you can see the generated content appear in real time. You can click Stop at any time to cancel.
After the AI finishes generating, you can choose from the following options:
- Click Accept to add the generated content.
- Click Reject to discard it.
- Click Try again to generate new content.
- Click Refine to give the AI more direction and generate again.
- Click the Copy icon to copy the generated content.
