Both answers are in the Student Handbook in your Knowledge Center. Attendance is set per course but capped by a university-wide limit, and this term's add/drop window is closing soon, so here's each one with its section.
Two separate rules apply here, one for attendance and one for the add/drop deadline. Both come from the Student Handbook.
Attendance. There's no single number for the whole university — each instructor sets the limit in the syllabus — but the handbook sets a ceiling no course can exceed. Under Section 4.3 (Class Attendance), missing more than 15% of a course's scheduled meetings can lower your grade or, past that point, trigger an administrative drop. For a class that meets three times a week over a 15-week term (45 meetings), 15% is fewer than 7 sessions — so the seventh absence is the one that can cross the line. Keep it to six or fewer, and always within the stricter of the syllabus limit or this cap.
Add/drop deadline. Under Section 2.1 (Registration and Enrollment), you can add or drop a course without it appearing on your transcript through the end of the second week of the term — this fall, that's Friday, September 11. Drop a course after that date but before the withdrawal deadline (end of week 9) and it shows on your transcript as a “W,” which doesn't affect your GPA. After week 9 you can no longer drop, only complete the course.
So: keep absences in any one class to six or fewer (and always within the syllabus limit), and make any add/drop changes by September 11 to keep them off your record. Both sections are in the Student Handbook if you want the full wording.
Want me to pull the withdrawal and “W” grade rules in full, so you know your options once the add/drop date passes? I can lay out each deadline and what it does to your transcript.
Student Handbook FAQ lets students ask plain questions and get instant answers pulled from your handbook and policies: attendance, academic integrity, housing rules, add/drop, and the code of conduct. Every answer cites the exact section, so students can trust it and read further.
Add your student handbook, housing agreement, academic-integrity policy, and code of conduct to the Knowledge Center. JoySuite indexes every section and keeps it current as the policies are updated.
Students ask Joy their questions in plain language — attendance limits, add/drop dates, residence-hall rules — and get answers drawn straight from the handbook, no PDF-scrolling required.
Questions come in natural language: "How many absences are allowed in a lecture course?" or "What are quiet hours in the residence halls?" — answered in seconds with the section cited.
Routine questions get an instant answer with the handbook section cited. When something needs a person — an attendance appeal, a housing exception — Joy says so and points the student to the right office with the details to bring.
Save this ask as a custom command on the assistant your team already uses, so anyone can run it in one step.
Every answer names the exact handbook section it came from, so students can read the full policy for themselves.
For petitions, appeals, and accommodations, Joy points students to the office that handles it instead of guessing at a policy call.
Students get handbook answers late at night or over the weekend, when the student services desk is closed.
Ask Joy which questions come up most to find the handbook sections worth clarifying, rewriting, or promoting.
Focus on residence-hall rules: quiet hours, guest policies, room changes, and what students can and can't bring.
Answer questions on plagiarism, citation, collaboration limits, and the consequences under your integrity policy.
Cover add/drop, withdrawal deadlines, credit-load limits, and how an incomplete or grade change works.
Guide visa-status questions, work-hour limits, and reporting rules from your international-student handbook.
A student handbook FAQ assistant answers students' questions about campus policies — attendance, academic integrity, housing, add/drop, and the code of conduct — using your institution's own handbook. Students ask in plain language and get an instant answer with the exact handbook section cited, instead of searching a long PDF.
Most of the questions students email in are already answered in the handbook — they just can't find the right section. When students can ask Joy and get a cited answer on demand, the routine 'what's the policy on…' email drops, and your staff spend their time on the petitions and exceptions that actually need a person.
Every answer is grounded in the documents you add to the Knowledge Center and cites the exact handbook section, so a student can read the full policy to confirm. Joy doesn't answer from outside your handbook, and when a question falls outside it or calls for judgment, Joy says so and points the student to the right office.
For petitions, appeals, disability accommodations, and other judgment calls, Joy doesn't guess at a ruling. It explains that the question needs a person, names the office that handles it, and tells the student what details to bring, so the handoff is quick and complete.
Anything covered by the policies you connect: attendance and absence limits, add/drop and withdrawal deadlines, academic-integrity rules, residence-hall and guest policies, the code of conduct, credit-load limits, and grade policies like incompletes and repeats. It works best for clear, policy-based questions.
